Interesting colour fact no 4! When you hear of madder you probably think ‘pink’. But when it is dyed with alum in it, it turns a beautiful auburn orange. Back in the day, farmers were obliged to harvest their madder crop every two years because the root can grow 2 meters deep causing devastation to other crops and plants. These days it still takes three months to produce madder in a watercolour pan (that’s why it’s not the cheapest of colours) and the recipe is still a closely guarded secret.
